There's a disconnect between the stage and the screen in the US. If you had a similar program to theater, but with making a film, plenty of high school boys would sign up.

Along with this, the British theater and television scenes are both centered in London, so there is a good deal of crossover. In the US, the theater scenes are mainly in New York and Chicago, so it becomes a "one or the other" choice for performers.
