Well, I didn’t get that we’re supposed to dislike her specifically - we’re supposed to dislike the monarchy (which, as an American, I do not), and we’re supposed to find her boring (which she is, relatively speaking).

The rape scene is even worse in the novel. It’s all from 14 year old Tom’s POV and is horrifically subjective.

I remember renting this thinking it was a romantic drama and watching it alone late at night. Then the rape scene happened and I didn't sleep that night. It was just scary and emotionally draining.

What a complete and utter waste of everyone’s time. Why does anyone think a remake of this movie is in any way needed? The original really is perfect as is. Great atmosphere, great acting, great twist, holds up after multiple viewings. A remake just isn’t going to measure up.
