I’m just going to say what we’re all thinking.

They are literal scams. If that’s not enough for you to hate them regardless of your politics, there’s something wrong with you (and/or your politics).

Misappropriating an anti-capitalist work and stripping all semblance of the ‘anti’ part to make youtube money sits somewhere around “imagery and deepfakes of dead celebrities used to shill products” on the scale of things capitalism has crossed or uncomfortably pushed the line on, for me.

I was very conscious of this as I wrote. I’m an old-fashioned leftie, and I’m delighted by the more progressive direction in which gaming is heading, while very aware that it still abundantly caters for those so terrified by the thought of being kind to people who don’t look like them.

The other big issue that it causes is a purposeful ignorance of real stories and real people that are just as captivating, if no moreso, than the fantastical stories they bandy about in an incredibly clumsy manner.

Merely plopping a black person, or a gay person, or a trans-person in a role and saying “diversity”…

I was expecting to see some giant novel length forum post about how the dude was abusive, especially given that the rest of the article mentions he’s a violent domestic abuser; but her post is literally just a reply almost at the bottom of its own page…

I’m finding it a bit difficult to reconcile the fact that I’ve been on the Something Awful forums every single day since 2004 with the fact that this guy was such an enormous piece of shit. I visit SA every day. Is not the website that was. People have mature, the culture have become somewhat woke. Is way less popular now, and way less alive, but is a good place to chat with other people.

Something Awful produced a wild amount of humor and culture for decades and had a massively outsized influence for a long time. It was a place where I learned a lot about writing, about politics and some other things.
