I think audiences expect a girl to be at the centre of triangles, and due to audiences expectations of gender roles, when it's a boy that's at the centre, a lot of what we could consider boilerplate standard for girls looks assholish when a guy does it.

I fail to see anything horrible or suprising. Civil War seemed to have the sub-text of a long nasty breakup between the TRUE Avengers power couple.
