Neutral: Just find a Chevy Luv or an 80's B-series Mazda. Mighty Max would work too and a Datsun 620. They are cheap and you might be able to find a driveable one.

I bought my Prius for the same reasons. I have cars to wrench on and that are way cooler than the Prius. But, one car sits outside and I don't feel bad about it. It always starts and is a great commute appliance. 

Side note, how does your friend manage only 45 MPG in a Prius? That’s terrible. Does he just goose it places? Drive 80 on the highway?
