7 years ago I looked at the Yaris vs. Prius C. On paper, they were very similar in TCO. I got the Prius C and have been surprised how close my estimates were.

I’m in the same boat but even worse. I have a car that’s paid for and gets about 50MPG (4.4l/km). It’s getting up there in mileage but will become my daughter’s car next year.

I almost pulled the trigger on a Volt this weekend but there was an airbag light on during the test drive. I've looked at the ELR as well. They are few and far between.

I agree that the Volt is in a sweet spot.

Fuel cells do well in rough duty when they are designed for it. Look at any US space program since Gemini. 

And battery development isn't just limited to cars. I'm not aware of the broad development of fuel cells for other industries. Battery development is in many areas.

I looked at your reply. I think the HV battery pack failure rate quoted from Toyota is less than 2% at 10 years. I see the failure rate as very low. I also see that the repair of a failed battery is not that difficult. I’ve inspected mine and cleaned the airflow channel on the battery and it’s not difficult. The…

OK, I think there’s a bit of an issue with this article. This is the 1st gen Prius. There were issues with that battery. I have a co-worker with a 2000 Prius. He got a new battery in 2003 under warranty. It’s been good for the last 16 years with no issue.

I’ve seen totaled repairs before. I had a clutch release fork failure on a previous car that was a “$2000 fix” on a $1500 car. The part at the dealer was $36. I bought a new fork, clutch, PP, T/O bearing for less than $200 and fixed it myself on a Saturday.
