Stalone was better than Jordan. In my opinion. Stalone is also a previous multi Oscar winner, starring in the franchise he invented. Also supporting actor is often a less neck and neck field than best actor which MBJ would have been in the running for. Don’t think that ones on race.

Will Smith was never better than in Ali.

I think Matt Damon has some really wonderful every man style old movie star qualities that make him an excellent lead, and I thought he was affable, but overall I thought that entire film was too light and unfocused. Nothing really had the impact I was hoping, neither the desolation or the gee wiz factor of the sci

Long story short since I have to go eat: they don’t make low and mid budget film any longer the films where they could take risks on casting. It’s all tent pole now, and if one of those goes bust, it can bring down the corporation. The opportunities for any young movie star these days are few and far between. For

Mad Max really is the best film of the year. Just need to be honest. Yes, it's that good. It won't win though most likely o don't worry.

Straight out of Compton was a story about black people, though. You can cast unknown because the brand is NWA. In other films, the actors are the brand, and there are very few black actor who have had a chance to build a brand and be valuable to a film in that way. It is a vicious cycle, but unfortunately if you learn

Jason Mitchell was the best of that young cast. I just didn’t find the role ultimately that compelling. That’s probably down to the writing. I don’t know. Like I said, I thought that film was embarrassingly amateurish at times. Young Ice Cube doing an impersonation rather than acting etc. Rather toothless and aimless.

Creed was very strongly directed - and directing is often the category in the oscars most open to PoC because fellow directors tend to evaluate based on merit - I bet it did well in the voting but in truth I think this was a very strong year for a lot of other people.

Haven’t seen Spotlight. Intend to! Can’t comment but I’ll certainly allow that could be a film succeeding on politics? Doesn’t mean I support other film succeeding for political reasons. Like, I am for art being evaluated on merit to whatever degree that’s possible. I’m for no one being unjustly elevated. Of any race.

I can respect that. My film collection is 500+ strong is chockablock with Chaplin and Linklater and Wyler, not just Stone and Spielberg - I honestly believe Fury Road to be one of the purest action movies ever made, and to whatever degree cinema IS motion, therefore one of the best movies ever - they’re called movies

Just chiming in and hoping you don’t mean me? Because in my first post I talked about how great MJB was.

I ask because because my favorite film from two years ago was BEFORE MIDNIGHT, I take movies seriously, and Mad Max is just genuinely an incredible film. The American film critics certainly agree with me. I can’t help but think your comment is really snarky but actually way out of step with the critical consensus on

I thought, of course, Elba obviously must’ve deserved to be nominated, but then I watch the movie and I just wasn’t terribly impressed. Watch it for yourself though it is worthwhile.

I totally agree I just don’t agree with correcting the scale by also giving undeserving awards to black people as well as white people.

I’m just one grumpy guy on the Internet with an opinion :-) film has been my passion from a very young age so I feel strongly about this stuff. I watch many many movies throughout the year so I feel that I am often more qualified than some people who speak as armchair commentators. But if you saw the same films I did

I’m just genuinely curious if you actually saw Fury Road?

There I agree with you. Fuck, didn’t like either of those two! They’re from previous years though. And the former was an adapted not original screenplay.

LOL. A nomination for best-fill-in-the-blank means that a film or actor was NOMINATED FOR BEING THE BEST. Best something. That’s the standard. Seriously put forward as a potential best of the year.

Sorry, but the very idea of the awards is rewarding the best. People vote for the noms by suggesting the single best performance of the year. Then people vote on those. The entire idea is that it has to be amazing, not merely good. It’s not a fucking participation trophy.

Mad Max: Fury Road is easily one of the best films in years, and it deserves the best picture - more vitally, Miller deserves best director. It’s an astonishing accomplishment. The Oscars are bullshit though so don't hold your breath. I guess that even knowing they're rarely reflective of actual quality, though, it's
