I've been getting the iPhone when it comes out for every version except the 3GS. I've had to pay full price - even for the first one since I wasn't eligible for the upgrade when it was released. Thank God for eBay to help recoup the cost.

I would say it's practical to keep something that valuable as far away from possible accidents if at all possible. Even a neighboring car can ding your car without meaning to.
