The only time we've seen Marshall (aside from a half second cameo in the first ep), he was in a story being told by Marceline. Gumball was a lot more pathetic in that ep than Bubblegum actually is (having Fionna make daisy chains, then making her hold the umbrella over him). I think it's because that was before M&PB

Given that Hank is a domestic abuser in the comics, him simply saying that the suit took its "toll" on him is a pretty bad sweep-it-under-the-rug moment - especially since it's pretty much excusing him. Like, 'oh he's not a bad guy, his mind was just warped!' Like people needed any more convincing that domestic abuse
