Fair enough. He didn't come off that way to me, but I haven't read the whole thread. *shrug* Hopefully the responses he received will inspire some thought in the "men can totes be feminist" direction.

How do you know he isn't? And what's the point of essentially replying to me to complain about it, rather than telling him directly?

I think you have a great point, and it doesn't read as trollish at all. Feminists are also people, and unfortunately people seem to have a problem with the "you're doing [x] a different way than I do, so you're not [x] at all" thing. While I can understand calling someone out who claims to be feminist and then

Hey, I just wanted to chime in somewhere on this thread and say that I enjoy how calm and rational your responses are — even when you're responding to someone who's been less-than-calm/rational. I will say, however, that I wish you'd reconsider the men-can't-be-feminists thing... I think it's AWESOME you recognize

Truth.

I don't think you're right about Berlin, but Germany is ranked #8 in Jewish population by country, according to Wikipedia...

I can only assume he'll be wearing nothing but a mustache and a smile.

Agreed — although giving an alcoholic a job at a vineyard was probably not the brightest idea.

"If my nephew slaps his sister, I don't punch him in the face and say "We don't hit people!""

Oh wow, I missed that one! And I totally agree that this isn't the only situation in which Jezebel has been hypocritical on this subject, I was just too lazy to go researching through back articles to find other examples than this most current one. Jez is really starting to bum me out.

Your comment wasn't incoherent at all! :) And I pretty much agree with every point you made. Women, in general, DO have it worse than men on the treated-as-objects scale, there's no denying that. But, like you said, I think the hypocrisy on subjects like this really makes feminists (at least, those that engage in it)

YES. It's almost laughable how many of these responses include the same victim-blaming bullshit that would cause people to rip out their hair if it was said about a woman.

"Hopefully some light bulbs go off."

How did you read anything that I typed as "intent negates the issue"? That's pretty much the opposite of what I said.

Yes, I know it's real, and I know it's not the same thing. That's why I put in that note — to acknowledge that. That doesn't mean that Jez's coverage of Hamm hasn't been hypocritical.

Yeah, no. I think a better analogy would be really large-breasted women — it's hard for them to 'hide' them, or their cleavage, and tons of people use the same rationality you just used to say, "I should be able to ogle them whenever I want". Who cares if he doesn't wear underwear? If that truly bothers you, then stop

Yeah, you're always going to get those kind of responses on Jezebel — I think they've been outnumbered by reasonable and thoughtful responses, though.

Oh, definitely! I wasn't suggesting we (or Jezebel) should start beating ourselves up, or anything; it would just be kinda nice to see someone from Jez acknowledge it with a "Fair enough, let's leave what's in his pants alone" sort of comment. :)

Oh crap — I just realized that without coverage of Hamm, Jr., I never would've read your wonderful song. CONFLICTED! :)
