Not really much that is needed. Just out of my first year and all I remember using that was related to the course (that was free) was Chrome and LibreOffice. And can't forget Adobe reader, since all class notes were put online.

Duracell has a tester on the battery now, just press the two dots and it'll show you how much is left in the battery. Not sure if it only applies to AA, but it's handy.
