Loved Into the Spiderverse, I’ll give you that one. But Black Panther? Have no idea what greatness people saw in that one beyond some neat set design. It was fine, mind you, but a warmed over live action Lion King doesnt strike me as cinematic brilliance

Here’s the thing though: Polanski can be simultaneously guilty and also treated unfairly by the justice system. Here’s Samantha Geimer (his victim) on the trial

Yeah somewhere else around here I mentioned Logan. It’s the only superhero movie that has cracked my yearly Top 10 since I started keeping them in 2009.

In an argument, people make statements. The other person then attempts to address or refute those statements. Sometimes these statements get a little bit away from the main topic. Like you might start by debating Polanski and then have a bit of a side argument about whether going through the

Of course not. Bernie Madoff had people lining up.

But yes I know how victim impact statements work. “One purpose of the statement is to allow the person or persons most directly affected by the crime to address the court during the decision making process.”

Exactly what I’m saying should be done with Ms. Geimer.

Sorry just trying to end this on a lighter note.  Have a good night

I think you misunderstood my Woody Allen point. I brought up a bunch of other celebrities like Broderick or Landis who committed crimes who society has decided to continue to not “cancel.” You said the difference was that those people went through the legal system and Polanski did not. However, Woody Allen also went

Yes but that’s hardly a fair comparison - you’re much cuter than I am

No, silly, but if you’re going to argue that no one agrees with me it’s certainly germane.

Ahhhh don’t you wish it were so, but my initial post is up to 19 likes, so....

Shhhhhh Bronty adults are talking

It’s not whataboutism to point out that Woody Allen also went through the legal system. That’s a statement of fact.

And come on. No one deserves a judge who wishes to turn a judicial proceeding into a circus, doing damage to the victim and preventing a fair trial to the perpetrator.  I think OJ Simpson was guilty but

Sure. Which is why I actually listen to what Samantha Geimer, Polanski’s victim, said, which is that she wants to stop being used as a symbol for a cause she doesn’t believe in, she has long forgiven Roman Polanski, and she wishes the world to move on.

Well I sure hope you use that logic to defend Woody Allen as well.

But also, Polanski didn’t flee to avoid the consequences of his crime. He fled after it became clear he wasn’t going to get a fair trial. To quote his victim:

“By the end of the trial, [presiding] Judge [Laurence J.] Rittenband seemed completely unhinged

Nah, it’s just not something you can have an objective conversation about. You think of a sex crime with religious fervor. Polanski sinned, and he is doomed to Hell. That’s it. No matter what comparisons I give, it won’t matter, and it’s likely to just annoy you further.

But if we can divorce this from the moral rages

To me it’s the 70s/80s dichotomy. The 70s was a great time for serious cinema (arguably the best in American history) but a lousy time for fun movies. The 80s was a great time for fun movies but a lousy time for serious American cinema. Both contributed some of my favorite movies. But I like a balance of both. Comic

Fair point about how victim impact statements aren’t definitive, though I still think it’s worth pointing out how little anyone cares about her thoughts or feelings on the matter.

As to Polanski? He committed a crime 42 years ago that the victim has moved past.  Mark Wahlberg beat a man senseless, Matthew Broderick

No I’m sorry I just think you’re unaware of a facet of our legal system. During sentencing (NOT part of testimony or investigation) the court listens to the opinions of the victims.  Google “victim impact statement.”  There were 150 in the Larry Nasser case before the judge pronounced sentence

You’re aware that we literally hear victims during the sentences of rape trials, right?  That it’s 100% something we do - take their word on how to judge them and sentence them?

“(Renoir? Godard? Kurosawa? Todd Phillips!?)

I know, right???
