For many immigrant farmworkers—some of whom of whom are fearful of being deported or losing their jobs—the fires were not something they could escape. They were forced to continue picking crops even as hazardous smoke and soot swirled through the air.

I have sympathy for the kids as individuals, but I have absolutely no sympathy for the overall situation of “how dare we deport a domestic abuser who broke his word, look at his cute kids.” It’s not a sympathetic story. It’s sad, but it’s not sympathetic, like when a drunk driver wraps themselves around a tree.

None of those kids would be U.S. citizens, and this problem would not exist, had this guy kept his word on his “voluntary return.” He’s a liar, not to mention a domestic abuser. I have no sympathy at all for this situation.
