I’m guessing you meant “to not fall” at the end there but it would certainly seem consistent with the rest of what we’re shown about her...not least since they decide that as a couple they want to step away from the story & its effect on their life together...
I’ve started to think the same thing. Writing about Mike wanting to marry Julie when they grew up and her “ghost” telling him the rest of it. I do believe she noticed Mike after all these years, but decided not to fall down that rabbit hole again.

as someone observed elsewhere in these there’s also the possibility that just as he kept from her the details of the man they killed she might have kept from him that she got there first on the Julie thing & chose not to take her book down that road...possibly because of his suggestion that they “put down” this thing…
