I really like how VW addressed this with my MK7 GTI. As the ambient lighting gets darker (sun goes down, dark clouds obscuring the sun, going under a bridge, etc), the gauge backlights will actually dim to almost off such that you’re compelled to switch the lights to the on position, restoring the backlighting.
