I still think the scene would have been better if the quantum machine returned the shield and a note that’s voice’d over Steve and Peggy dancing.

After Steve makes his solo jump into the past, Bruce, Sam Wilson, and Bucky assume he’ll return within moments, having completed his task, but instead, they realize that Steve never intended to pop right back, and instead chose to live out his years peacefully until becoming an old man.

note that Hawkeye was *conspicuously absent* when Rhodes said that line...

They pull him out whenever they need a plain-talking (but mostly inoffensive!) Middle American family man who’s only 50% about that life. I personally don’t think they’ve used that trope in an interesting way, and I certainly don’t think that other characters needed to die for him twice.

Also, to be clear, the Agent Carter TV series (both seasons still streaming on Hulu!) has a whole plotline about Peggy getting over the loss of Steve. A mere acquaintance he was not.
