I think it probably depends on the school and the professor? There were a couple of profs at my school who requested essays in addition to or instead of timed exams at the end of the class.

Look that’s great for you (congratulations on your law review note!!!) but speaking as a former law student who graduated in 2010 there were definitely essays that were written for some of my law school classes.
