This is the right take on this, and an excellent comparison.

The owners make enough money to do that without slashing payroll
Here’s an even hotter take. How about the owners pay their employees a living wage with proper benefits as well as paying the players what they’re worth. These people are billionaires, why should the player who has a narrow window of time to make his money be the one to give up money so the owners can keep more?
“and maybe Machado just sucks?”
Goddammit. And yet I toil in the greys.
Look, I know this isn’t the popular opinion on Deadspin, but hear me out. What if this is just simply the MLB version of building a Super Bowl team around a nucleus of a good QB on a favorable rookie contract, surrounded by decent talent? How many recent World Series champions featured Manny Machado and/or Bryce…
In the next CBA, players demand to be able to hit the market sooner.
10-year deals for players this young are going to have to come with several player opt outs; odds are neither would actually finish out a 10-year deal if they signed one this offseason. They’d likely opt out after 3 or 4 years unless something went REALLY wrong.
That’s really the only resort the players have unless they can prove collusion.
As a fan of a team, I don’t want to see ten year deals. Ten years is a long time, and I certainly don’t begrudge Harper and Machado for trying to get as long a deal as possible, but if things don’t work out, a team won’t be able to do anything to get better until that contract is off the books. (I mean, yeah, there…
How do you fix this? Owners clearly are cutting back salaries while making more money than ever. The players have no choice but settle for whatever they are given. I’m thinking the players are going to have to strike when the CBA is up and change the whole salary structure of the game.
Oh I didn’t go to Catholic School but I went to a private prep school and I KNOW these kids. Entitled, privileged kids who revel in their smug superiority. I was a little shit myself but college really broadened by horizons.
It’s probably also difficult for them to tell minorities apart when they’ve only seen other white people in their provincial lives.
The talking points of the rally usually refer to their outrage at the “genocide” of abortion. But you know who really suffered a genocide?
Lexicon Devil was one of the best punk songs. Pat Smear isis/in the Foo Fighters. There is a great documentaries of the late 70s early 80’s punk scene in California called “ What We Do In The Shadows” that focuses on Darby Crash, their leas singer
See you all at Oki Dog
i’d get on Glenn Greenwald’s side on Assange. All journalists should rush to his defence. The ramifications of America’s vendetta against him outweights everything else.
It took them longer than usual to rule out lupus.

Wrestling coach here. I am tired of hearing the same thing from my fellow coaches and wrestling parents: “Wrestling toughens these kids up”; “I made my kid wrestle to build character!”; “I signed my son up to wrestle to make him tough!”
