Battletoads was fairly big though at the time.  granted, like you said, not as huge as TMNT but it was still very popular especially the first game.  pretty much everyone I know owned it on the NES.  I loved playing the SNES version.  And hell it was popular enough to have a cameo in Ready Player One.
