Here's the other thing. If you are told all you life that only stories about people that look like you are worth telling then isn't a little easier to think on some level that everyone else must be less? Diversity is always positioned as good for minorities. It would be great if it was seen as good for everyone.

Just want to say there are 3 days left to support the kickstarter for Tuskeegee Heirs! It’s amazing!

Whoa, I need to check that out. Also, Moon Girl is quite age appropriate:

No, like your basic classics.

Ooh, can we make graphic novel recommendations? How about Shadoweyes, starring a black girl superhero?

uh, did you MISS the Reading Rainbow Kickstarter?

They did. I remember diversity in children’s media being a pretty big deal in the 90's.

I recently listened to a podcast where they discuss how hard it is to get published for authors of color, and even when you do get published the trouble doesn’t end there. 8 out of 10 books that people ask to be banned from school libraries are by authors of color. Apparently white people are not comfortable with

Right? What a kid. So she’s 11. A mere 24 years to go and she becomes eligible for the presidency. Marley 2040!!!

My favorite part was when she mentioned that even white boys with dogs get sick of reading about white boys with dogs.

Reading Rainbow was one of my favorite shows as a kid. I remember going to the library and getting excited whenever I saw a book with a “As seen on Reading Rainbow” tag on it.

I cannot handle her. My god.

Do the Animorph books from Cassie’s POV count? Though now that I think about it, the Animorphs had a fairly relatively diverse group of main characters...

I’m white, so I can’t say that I can completely relate to this girl’s experience, but I think this is something that white males just don’t understand at all. I love reading fantasy and ya, and when I discovered that there are a lot of great books out there that feature badass women and girls, it changed my world. A

Yes. I didn’t mention it at first, but white kids should see diversity celebrated in literature, too. My mom is a bit racist, but I always had children’s books about black kids on my bookshelf - Mirandy and Brother Wind, and Talking Eggs were some of my favorites. I went to school in a racially diverse area (PG

Seriously. Her family must be so proud of her.

Oh my gawwwwwd! I love her! I'm on the fence about having kids but if I ever did have a kid I would want them to be as awesome as that little girl.

This is a kid who’s going places. Bravo, Marley
