Spot.IM! It's like being in the parts of the Matrix where everything becomes green streaming text! It will drive you mad, and you will see the face of God, and you'll be so distracted by that you won't notice any other problems.

This is a fair reminder that Disqus DOES suck.

Yeah. I mean, yes, I track my comment-to-upvote ratio, but at least I have the decency to be ASHAMED that I do that!

I'm being a bit of a broken record, but while this is true of minor matters (we don't need a "Hide Media" button at launch!), not having basic functionality like sub-threading and top-line sorting by newest/oldest for a couple months is going to irreparably harm the AVClub as a community discussion space. By default,

SERIOUSLY!!!!! THIS IS CRAZY!!! HOW DID I NOT KNOW THIS?!?!?!

Here I'm on less solid ground. I *think* the Kinja comment system was designed in part as a way to get free, community generated content that could be "Promoted" as something more than comments. Commenters become volunteer bloggers, and all the profit goes to Gawker. This plan hasn't worked, but means they have a

As disclosed by Sean O'Neill in one of his angrier moments, in house commenting doesn't drive clicks and thus ad revenue. Even here.

Univision acquired Gizmodo and the AVClub, and noticed they were double-paying for running and maintaining two separate systems for reasonably similar websites.

I'm reassured that the AVClub leadership DOES value the commenting community. The automatic whitelist and comment porting stuff isn't easy, and it shows that Laura Browning and friends want the commenting community to transition more or less intact.

Disqus can't round. This is why we are shifting to Kinja.

It depends- if it launches with the same sorting and threading capacity as Disqus, annd doesn't bring in a wave of trolls….probably. There will be some posters who don't transition, but the vibe will be similar.

TO be fair, it does seem to be breaking Disqus too. My show replies are breaking down at least.

Thanks for the response!

Uh…what?

Can they be disabled by a user? See Disqus' "hide media" button for what I'm talking about.

Uh….they absolutely are the one's affected by it. This site is their job. I'm not optimistic about the change, but whether it goes smoothly or poorly matters a whole lot more to Sean and Laura than to you or I.

Sean, is this Claim Form a temporary measure- basically grandfathering in the DIsqus hordes as an initial base of non-greys, or is this planned as an ongoing feature of KinjAVClub- anyone who takes the effort can default to non-greydom?

Such a great user name by the way. makes me laugh every time I see it, 1b6a85.

Over the past few years, the business model of the AVClub has in general shifted from long-form serialized content (TV Club Classic, most notably) to shorter, more punchy material. I understand why this is the case, and I'm not complaining. This is a business, and things like GJI and Newswire snark about Trump bring

That is the saddest and most honest piece of fanboy objection I have ever seen.
