Free trade allows every country to produce what they are good at producing (and export it), and import what they are not good at producing. The U.S. is good at producing a wide range of things. Free trade is good for the U.S.
In a trade war like this, the environmental benefits of reduced shipping are the silver lining inside a bag full of dog crap.
Domestic industries will realize that their competition, the imported goods, are more expensive, and will raise their prices accordingly. They may set their prices to be “just” cheap enough that you’d buy domestic over the import, but everything gets more expensive for consumers.
