When it's thrown it doesn't really matter what the thumb does... It's hardly a carbon copy of Dio's horns, but if someone threw this in the middle of a Parkway Drive gig no-one is going to go up to them and say "Excuse me, you just need to re-position your thumb there... That's better!".
