There were road legal 917s also. And both 917 and 962 (in race form) could go much faster than current 918.
I think, the reason for IMS, regardless of it’s failures, is a fine example of taking huge engineering shortcuts. Some genius decided to put same cylinder head on both sides of the engine, but facing different directions, to save some deutschemarks on CNC casting machine, overcomplicating design, making the engine…

They were selling kit cars, at least in early 2000s, and prices were ridiculously low. Makes me sad I didn’t bought one, when it was accessible
