If weight and size are not an issue, a carpet sample or short runner does wonders for smoothing out a place to sleep and helps insulate you from the ground.
Cut several Funoodles in half lenghtwise and stake them under the uphill edge of your ground tarp. Rain water will run under the tarp and it’s a lot easier and works better than trenching.
