I've had similar experiences. When I'm near my healthiest weight (when I feel best, can hike, jog, etc.), I get all sorts of compliments — nice earrings, love the shoes, where do you get your hair done. It's like people notice all the great things about me. Same shoes, 20 lbs heavier and I might as well be wearing…

If only because of the ripple effect on families, I think suicide is almost never ok (end of life issues are the exception). Once a person commits suicide, the likelihood of another suicide within that person's family grows substantially.
