As much as I love the styling of the 80 Series, that six cylinder motor was gutless and overburdened by weight. But the size is just about perfect.

They have been testing these for at least a few years now - I took these pics almost exactly two years ago in a Wal Mart parking lot, outside of the Army’s Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland.

They also had a fold flat seat design that allowed the whole thing to be a bed of sorts. I always thought it was a cool car, add a few inches ground clearance and a better awd system (it’s based on the CR-V) and it would have been every bit as cool as the FJ cruiser.
