I don't understand what the first girl's girlfriend is crying about all the time. In this one particular instance, it doesn't feel like the guy's fault. Just tell him to back off like Sara said.

Fair enough, the examples could have been better. The point I was trying to make is more about just how much purely physical likeness matters. I also have an issue with what appears to be people telling zoe that she isn't black enough. I think that's a slippery slope as well.

Yes. I know what colorism is, and I'm not trying to be glib. There just isn't anything in this article that really explains the source of the outrage to me.

I doubt you need my forgiveness, but I see your point.

Yeah, I haven't seen the show in about 6 years, but Sandra Oh was obviously always the best part.

It there is one thing you can absolutely NOT trust, it is a white person's opinion of how racist they are. Well done, MTV.

Haha. Nice.

GREY'S ANATOMY IS STILL ON THE AIR!?

What does her comfort with talking about race have to do with anything? If she doesn't feel like she has the life experience to speak on a particular topic, why would she?

So it wasn't being black that made her life hard, but how black she was?

By people, I think I would mean anyone really angry about a movie they haven't seen. I guess reducing a role to making sure the skin tone is exact seems more like a step backwards to me.

I can agree with most of that, but a lot of people are throwing names in saying "she would be better", when they're only really basing it on looks anyway (since they haven't seen the film, or Zoe's performance). So Hollywood hires for looks, but even the fan casting is...well...mostly based on looks.

Sure. Fine. But I guess to put my question another way..

Just across the board? That's a really general statement to ascribe to all filmmakers.

I'm more than okay admitting that, but I am still really put off by people criticizing someone this much before they have even seen the film.

Just because someone resembles someone, doesn't mean they're the best actress for the job, right?

Also, isn't it kind of offensive to tell Zoe Saldana she isn't "Black enough" for a role? I'm getting really mixed signals from this outrage.

Sorry, am I missing something here? Blackface for a black person doesn't change their race, just their skin tone. Also, actors and actresses change their appearance all the time for rolls. Charlize theron got even whiter and paler and uglier for "Monster".

She drew first...

"and it's cleaning the fuck up at the box office."
