I’ll take “waste of time” for 200 Alec!
But not nearly as charming.
I very much try to avoid that kind of thinking. If someone is successful, I tend to think that they earned it, until I’m proven wrong. I try to be more charitable to people in bad situations, though. At least until proven wrong again. If I see someone doing something stupid and harmful to themselves, then I tend to…
A real reason why we dismiss luck is also that some of us have people we know who like to assign luck as the only reason we’re successful. My mother in law is one of those people. According to her, my wife would never have gotten as far as she has if she hadn’t been lucky enough to marry me. I disagree. My wife is a…
Yeah, and I have the Bluetooth version. Conscious decision on my part.

Again. I personally find utility in the connected aspect of this device. I also appreciate that it’s connected via BT instead of WiFi because I get the issues included in the IoT trend, and somewhat agree. I don’t have many devices that have WiFi connectivity, and that’s on purpose. I mean yeah, my tablets, fire…

Edit: I did a little looking. There are competitors that offer immersion cookers sans bluetooth. Of course, if you look at the review numbers on Amazon, either the bluetooth is a desired feature, or Shep here is one helluva salesman, because the Anova has over 1,000 reviews where the competitors aren’t even in the…

I absolutely understand how economics of scale works.
You’re in a vast minority of people who would be interested in a device that didn’t offer X feature. Therefore, the company would have to make a minuscule number of devices lacking X feature, which would cause production costs per unit to increase. Nobody else that…

You’re an adult (assumedly). You can choose not to buy something just because Shep tells you that you need it.

I disagree on one (and only one) point in your response: Consumer Reports is far from unbiased. :D

It would probably cost more to produce a “dumb” version because of the economy of scale.
If you consider the price of sous vide equipment up until now, it’s ridiculously cheap. You’re griping about pennies when we’ve had a recent drop of over a thousand dollars in the tech. Seriously... it’s not even worth my time to…

Do yourself a favor and eventually invest in the 14" lodge skillet. It’s heavy as hell, but really makes a difference when finishing a steak. I have cast iron, SS, and anodized aluminum, and the clear winner for me is Cast Iron. They aren’t cheap, but totally worth it.

I got one at Christmas.
Best.Cooking.Gift.Ever.
Seriously... my wife has gone from “What is that silly looking thing?” to “What are you going to make with it tonight?” It took exactly ONE steak for her conversion, and after the pork loin from heaven, and the multiple steaks I’ve cooked on my Anova, we’re both…

I don’t think my wife would let me hot-glue one of those tiles to her glasses...
Note: If you don’t have an Insta Pot, and you cook, shame on you. I just got one for Christmas, and am already starting to see the many uses of it. I like it a lot better than my old analog pressure cooker. My wife isn’t afraid of it…

SIGH....
Why does anyone take this as anything other than hyperbole?
And why do you make me want to defend this buffoon? Oh yeah, because your silly article is as silly as his original comment. Stop. Just Stop.
I’d trade mine for a pack of smokes... and I don’t even smoke!
If you ever have the inclination, get an electric smoker. That’s a great way to have pulled pork. Or if you like fiddling, get a wood fired or pellet smoker. (I like electric because it’s essentially fire & forget and doesn’t over-smoke the meat)
I’m with you, unless I’m already smoking something. Smoked potatoes are a wonder to behold.
Chili is usually a multi-step dish that starts with soaking beans—if you’re making the kind with beans, which I know some people who are not Texan enjoy
