Drake is still the dork who practiced rapping in his trailer between filming scenes on Degrassi. Then he got signed to Young Money and people in the US decided that was good enough for them.

Agreed. When I first heard about this project, I definitely assumed this movie was made by filmmakers with more can-do energy than understanding of fair use. But the more they keep talking, the more it sounds like this was the plan from the start.

After watching the trailer for this- I have a STRONG feeling there is absolutely no other reason we are hearing about it other than this “controversy”. It looks like a *TERRIBLE* movie. The makers could not have been more lucky than to have it pulled.

This feels so very manufactured.   Like they had to know that Warner wouldn’t just be like “Okay, make a movie using our IP”.  The pushback from the “media conglomerate” is part of the show and the goal.

“Drew says she’s had the movie vetted by lawyers for exactly that reason, constructing the film to abide by fair use standards. “

Yeah, seems like she can free The People’s Joker anytime she wants.

If it WAS free on YouTube instead of a paying screening at TIFF, this would’ve been fine.

Remember in Wonder Woman 84 when WW used the body an unconscious/non-consenting man for sex and put it repeatedly in harm’s way?

Man takes check for advertising work. No need to help them out.

Here’s what’s happening here.

Its culture appropriation....

Biggest mistake wasn’t making it a porno. They’d have been just fine.

Its so obscure, some film festival no one cares about screens some film student fan made film. It gets yanke, and it’s news.....

either this person knew this would happen so they could get press from it or they’re somehow very naive about copyright law despite wanting to work in the entertainment industry

Im sorry, how is this remotely news? A short, fan made film, basically, gets the boot because of licensing.

When you’re using a well-established character like that it seems like you’d work out those licensing issues before you released (hell, before you made) your film.  But I guess this is a good way to drum up publicity and make yourself look like a downtrodden underdog.

This site just gets more and more depressing, lazy, and awkward. These days I think the only thing that brings me back to the AV Club is muscle memory.

“It’s just been something in me that just let me know, like this shit real life,” Allen said. “I done seen people die. I done been around people that died…. Anybody can die.”

Yes, yes. Fuck the police. Fuck them all. Until you need them.
