It's hard to meet people in a new city. I've had some success with taking an acting class for fun (I also live in Philly!), but I'm not sure if any of those tentative friendships will last past the last class. I have nice coworkers, but it isn't quite the same.

I wish I did. We argued on a couple other points, and then he posted a MASSIVE wall of text that I just don't have the mental energy to even tackle today. I'm clearly not going to change his mind, and he's not going to give up having the last word anyway. Plus the sheer number of logical fallacies are mind-numbing.

Oh, I certainly don't think that unions are without problems by any means. I do think they created a net gain because they allowed workers to somewhat even the playing field with employers, but that is not to say that there hasn't been corruption and nastiness within the union structure.

I agree, you are overthinking this one! You're only around for the weekend - he'll almost certainly read it as friend hangout plus potential no-strings hookup. I predict he will be on you like white on rice!

Aw, hon. I can only offer virtual hugs and sincere sympathy. That stinks.

"Lastly, even if one did concede that unions really were responsible, at least in part, for the above, and that they were good, it would still be hard to say unions were a good thing on net. Collective bargaining is exceptionally costly economically, it creates all the evils of a cartel but it requires a whole legal

Any smarty Jezzies have some good links on union and labor history? I'm currently in a fight/discussion on facebook with an former law school colleague about whether or not they are a good thing. I posted a comment pointing out some of the benefits we enjoy courtesy of the labor movement (no child labor, limited work

I'm with you on Two Broke Girls. I wanted to like that show so much because 1) I adore Kat Dennings and 2) the premise seemed cute. But the constant jabs at Han (and any other character of color) killed it for me.

I am torn between my deep love for Saoirse Ronan and my hatred for all things Smeyers. What to do? What to do.

Can you link to the article you are getting this from? I've read a lot of different ones over that last week or so because I've been weirdly obsessed with the case, and all the ones I've read have reported that the boys were swept away before she started knocking on doors.

They are seriously the cutest little things. This story breaks my heart so much, especially the people talking about all the things she should or shouldn't have done that night. Do they not think that she is crying herself to sleep every night torn apart by guilt about what she maybe could have done differently?

Just to clarify because I realize this was not clear in my previous response, I'm not saying that her neighbors didn't act atrociously, just that they didn't send away the two little boys to die.

She has previously stated that her children had already been swept away before she started knocking on doors. http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/staten_island/mother_flood_of_tears_qgAAST3xdI2wkdLpTOau1M and

According to the articles I've read, no. She was quite close to the border of the evacuation zone, but not actually in it. When her basement started flooding, she panicked and tried to get to her sister in Brooklyn.

That's definitely an asshole move.

They didn't do that. They refused to help her look for the boys after they had already been swept away by the storm. Still very sad, but I don't think I would be brave (or stupid?) enough to go out into a hurricane at full blast either. :(

That's awful. I voted in a Catholic Church today and didn't see any of that. I'm glad the one used as a polling place here was respectful enough of voters to keep that away from the area used for voting.

PA is 10'. And it only forbids "election materials."

In PA, election materials only have to be at least 10' away from the polling place. So when I went to vote today, there were clusters of signs exactly 10"1" away and definitely within sight of the door. I'm guess there probably isn't a problem with the mural (at least technically) because it isn't "election material."
