I think a lot of this could be solved if we approached difficulty levels differently. Perhaps instead of saying something like:
A person will suffer through a lot if they love what they are doing or love the environment they are in. How much and for how long varies from person to person obviously.

I find it perplexing that the Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony caught flak for creating technologies that were meant to create games that got people off their couches and basically "trick" gamers into being physically active.
