I'm not sure I understand the reason for disabling all of the other features. When you first install the extension, you are taken through a setup wizard that gives you the option to start with recommended settings or minimalist settings. Then the wizard walks through many of the most popular options.

And with Dropbox's offline access to starred files, you can even eliminate the need for 3G or wifi!

I've used this one a few times. It is too bad they only use the acronym for the URL, but "Let me google that for you" is easy enough to remember.

I think that may be the point. Lightroom gathers all the tools you'll need for basic to intermediate image editing and management. It is geared towards the advanced-amateur to professional photographers. I've heard some people call it their "digital darkroom", where they can manipulate photographs the same way

I've never used Gimp for photo manipulation, so I can't comment on that. As far as a comparable free software to Lightroom, I'm sure they are out there, but I'm not familiar with them. I assume, however, that the differences between them and Lightroom are analogous to the differences between Word and OpenOffice or

I haven't used Lightroom much but what you're asking is like asking why you should buy Microsoft Word when you can get Notepad++ for free.
