I'm pretty sure if you're connected to a network as you install the full blown desktop version of ubuntu, it tries to download the most up to date versions of all packages.

Definitely agree with the last point, if you really want to learn about linux and what makes it different to other OS's, go with Arch.

I used to set my phone's alarm sound so it was the same as my ring tone, then leave it at the furthest point away from my bed.
