I always thought the seed for Data's real emotional development was planted when he downloaded Lal's memories in The Offspring.

Someone on a thread awhile back suggested that instead of Data's apparent death in Nemesis, he was actually recruited by Federation time travelers as an agent. I thought that was an ingenious idea for a new show.
