Why oh why can't kids just go back to hurting each other with words?
Why oh why can't kids just go back to hurting each other with words?
I like it this way, for some reason.
Yeah, Wilkins' douchiness is kinda overshadowed by Watson's in the whole story.
Maybe some kind of "arrangement"? Whereby if Weiner wins the NYC mayor job she gets a divorce afterwards?
Oh, it's def. unfair. W&C are supposed to have offered her a collaboration (which would have put her in the author space), but her dislike of Watson (go figure) and the fact W&C's previous efforts were embarrasingly incorrect compelled her to decline.
Watson's account was published in 1968, which includes his epiphany upon seeing Franklin's image 51. I suppose 10 years counts as "way after her death" in scientific publication time.
Franklin did not have to complete picture. W&C were able to explain the repeat distance by their paired-bases interpretation. This is the important discovery.
"Thus, while we do not attempt to offer a complete interpretation of the fibre-diagram of structure B, we may state the following conclusions. The structure is probably helical. The phosphate groups lie on the outside of the structural unit, on a helix of diameter about 20 angstrom. the structural unit probably…
"So if you present Idea A in person, then it's Ok for someone else to underhandedly obtain a paper you have written on Idea B (while it is in the process of being approved for publication) and then capitalise on it?"
The Wikipedia account of this seminar:
The images she she presented in 1951 were of lower quality than the later images improperly transmitted to Watson & Crick. The lower quality images were sufficient to, say, infer qualitative details of the structure if not exact bond lengths, repeat distances, etc.
She presented her data in a public forum in her seminar of 1951; this informed the original structural chemical efforts of W&C. If you present your data in public, there is no guarantee that someone else won't interpret it better than you and capitalize on the fact.
Franklin knew that W&C were constructing a model; she was the one who shot down their previous "central backbone" version.
THESE IS NO SAVING THROW VS BEHOLDER POOP
The publication of Franklin's data was meant to coincide with the publication of Watson and Crick's model, which gave the correct structure. She wan't "too late" in publishing it, it was intended that she publish the data-driven follow-up to W&C's "big idea" letter. Her paper was intended to amplify the evidence for…
I say this not to diminish Franklin's contribution to the DNA story, but she didn't discover the structure first. She had accumulated the clearest x-ray images of DNA crystals, which only hint at the structure, and presented them in a public venue: her seminar of November 1951. Her interpretations, which were also…
White dress kinda looks like a rumpled sack.
I regarded this as just a conceit of Sara's writing. I don't think it was meant to be provocative.
"Soooo, it's like: a picture of a gray cat......his (or her) mouth is open a bit and it has this kind of wide-eyed, quizzical look. It's sitting back a little bit iin someone's apartment, apparently.
