It’s a kind of centrifugal fan. If you look inside a typical floor vacuum it will have the same kind of pump in it with straight blades. The advantage to them is they move a lot of air while being fairly robust and resistant to foreign objects.

The vanes widen as they move outward, which creates an accelerative effect for the air at the base of the vane. It creates a high-pressure zone at the base and a low-pressure zone at the exit, which effectively sucks the air out of the wheel.
