My most generous theory, is that somehow if she stayed involved it would create some kind of legal problems for her or for the people involved in the film. That by backing out the film will get released that much quicker and Simmons will get roasted in the court of public approval regardless.

Agreed. If you keep reaching out a helping hand and the person keeps slapping it away, at what point do you say “Fine” and move on to the next person. If someone wants to make their lives better, I’ll help them. If they want to wallow in ignorance, then move on.
