The number is higher than the US, sure, but not that significantly especially when you consider that the US has significantly more prisoners than Russia and almost double the prisoners per capita. Both countries are higher than the European average.

I’m just going to pull up the sentencing guidelines for Alabama since they’re currently starving their prison population for the crime of not wanting to be slaves, but possession there carries a sentence of up to 10 years. If she had been flying to Montgomery instead of Moscow, would there be half as much outrage?
