You are omitting the crucial fact that the 80s version was merely the weakest of remakes. The show originated in black and white in the 60s, and was in all ways superior. In other words mega-shitty, but not ultra-shitty.

I think the guy's got a lot of charisma and all that, but I wonder how much effort it takes him to look all the time like he does in that shot. I don't think eyes and mouths would naturally do what's going on there.
