@spencercal: Open as in open source and open standards. VP8 and WebM are. H.264 is not.

Before we all go calling it Google's own standard...

@Jesse Tobiason: I think we should all be careful not to fall into the trap of calling people selfish for fully utilizing the services that telecoms sell them, for whatever reason.

@Prostate of Grace: And thank you, xda-developers, who make it pretty trivial to root just about any Android phone out there.

@geekymitch: Disclaimer: I'm talking out of my ass a bit, and I have no real knowledge on this matter.

I doubt it will be a problem. Verizon has lots of bandwidth-devouring Android phones already. And it will take a lot of AT&T users a while to get out of their contracts.

@the_other_stevejobs: I didn't hear anyone say anything about hotspot/tethering, and you can bet your ass that VZW will charge a pretty penny for it anyway.

There's no way VZW will not find a way to charge a hefty sum every month for the feature.

@symbology: Ha, I'm going to have to try this on my rooted Epic (no WiMax in my area).

I'd be skeptical about this really being the VZW iPhone this time, except that everyone in the world was invited except Gizmodo.

@crd22: I have a Core i5 in mine. It's good enough for real work for sure. That's probably sacrificing some battery life, but I've never actually run out of power without an outlet available, so I can't say how long it lasts.

@Dr_Watson: Buy a convertible notebook. You can't possibly replace your laptop (if you actually type a lot on it) with something that lacks a keyboard.

@Keith Whistler: You can still buy wearable displays. The resolution sucks. I'm thinking that has something to do with the epic failure.

@DreamTheEndless: So they make a consumer version and a server version. The server version keeps the POSIX cert because only the server customers would care. I'm willing to bet that 30% of software sales is worth more to them than having a certification that 99% of their consumers don't even know about (or would

On a slightly-related topic, where is my wearable hi-res computer display?

@DreamTheEndless: Okay, so iOS isn't fully POSIX-compliant and MacOS is. A distinction that's not worth making in this case because it doesn't have any effect.

@siwex80: I still think side-loading will disappear from the Apple ecosystem entirely (unless you jailbreak) in time.

I briefly skimmed the article, and all I can say is that there's no way I'm buying a $1300 feminine hygiene product, even if it is French.

@siwex80: It suits *some* developers well. You (might) expand your audience, but if you're already a power player with a large audience or you have a niche product that likely will see no benefit, all you get is a 30% bite out of your revenue (provided that side-loading is no longer allowed).
