Its pretty straight forward with some patience ! The guys who make the upgraded seals for the VANOS have a pretty clear DIY. I would recommend a VANOS rebuild for anyone with 100k+ e46 3er. The car has gained back torque now at lower rpm making it easier to drive in stop go traffic

The 325i has the vanos issues too but it takes about half the time for a DIY as the M3 (which by itself took me 80$ and 9 hours) and needs more care with the timing chains being touched upon

Although it is usually the best case to skip the auto box for the manual in most BMW's, from what I hear the SMG in the E60 was the only gearbox the car was designed to work well. Most people feel that the 6 speed is like an afterthought for the NA market with relatively poor performance.

I agree and that's why I think the blame is on the overly crazy emission and crash norms these days than manufactures for the bloated crazy powered cars. I would love to see a 2000 pound Mclaren f1 sized car with 200 something horsepower. But thats not going to happen with today's regulations unless they go overboard…

Only the Alfa has slowly gained weight to be launched in US to be more like 2450 lbs ! Its 2400 pounds with a carbon fiber tub ! Regulations sure dont help making lighter cars ! I don't see it become any better either

Fun fact ! Even the Atom's Hartely V8 is infact at a base level 2 Hayabusa motors joined together. It has been developed quite a bit over the original design in the Radical SR8 though.
