I’ve encountered the same. I think it’s the same sort of thing where some men don’t like to be called “Mr. —-” because “Mr. --- is my dad”. Seems like an arrested development thing to me.

I’ve gotten in trouble for using “ma’am” before because apparently it makes some women feel old. I’ve never been sure what to do with that, since “ma’am”, like “sir”, is supposed to be a term of general respect for any adult person, not just for the old people. It’s just good manners.

That will have an effect on the economy. The collapse of the health insurance industry will mean an awful lot of lost jobs (they can’t all just be shifted to administering the new coverage, as a big part of the savings involves eliminating them). Don’t get me wrong - it’s worth it. But it will have repercussions.

They went on strike when universal health care came to where I live in 1962. Some left for other places and never came back. The public will not support them, because the public wants universal health care. They’ll make a ruckus and then give in. Or they can move to Somalia and keep working in for-profit health care.…
