I also am not opposed to your idea, I use my xbox for my other tv. The thing is the smart feature is going to cost you like $100 more, MAXIMUM, and it gives you security that no matter where you put your tv/who owns it, it's going to have that capability.

I've never updated mine but that's because I never had to. Actually I take that back I did it to get showtime ondemand. It already came with netflix, hulu, youtube, amazon prime ready, etc.
