I don’t remember a lot of similarities. However, I don’t know if you’ve played Metal Gear 2, but MGS featured a LOT of ideas from that game. Everything from bits of the scenario to boss fight design to character types. I felt like I was playing a 2D MGS at times.

The plot jumps around more than the first game. The setting of the first is more memorable, as are the situation and characters. This is my opinion.
