I can’t count how many times I’ve googled a particular phrase from an article (usually just out of curiosity about the wording) only to find that at least several websites used…

Melee is still a fantastic game.

It has nothing to do with sales. The main reason is because Pokemon has a lot of variety when it comes to its characters. It just makes sense to have 9 when Pokemon span a huge gamut of biological differences, elemental affinities, and move sets. A bunch of dudes with swords is just unimaginative. 

As someone who’s a huge fan of the Metroid series, I’d say Samus and Ridley are the only two Smash-worthy characters. I wouldn’t mind some costume variations on Samus, though, to represent some of the different games.

It’s also missing another point: how important each game is in each series. There may be >100 “Mario” games, but there are really only like 10 best-sellers. And just because there are like 50 platformers where you play as Mario doesn’t mean there should be more Mario characters in Smash Bros.

How on earth can Nintendo justify having so many Fire Emblem characters and not Dillon, their western game protagonist? Wasn’t Nintendo just complaining that people are overlooking the Dillon games? There are a bunch of Nintendo games and games that are on Nintendo that aren’t featured in Smash Bros. It’s stupid.

Even though they say it’s not a port of the Wii U version, I don’t really see enough of a difference to get this one. A 73-character roster is great if you have 72 friends with unique preferences, but for most people, including me, 40-something is probably just fine.

This game looks pretty awesome—not sure how it evaded my radar despite being my favorite genre. It’s a shame that this came out at the same time as Chasm, which I’ve been following for years; otherwise, I’d probably jump right in.

Procedural stitching together a map is not mutually exclusive with level design. The rooms themselves can have great, intentional, thoughtful design, while how they’re stitched together on your map doesn’t really matter too much, which is why a game like Chasm can leave that up to randomness and it still feels exactly…
