This isn’t about “Tying things to the framerate”
Optimization is more than just hitting 60fps.
It never fails. Someone makes a reasonable post pointing out how idiotic capital G gamers are being and a capital G gamer has to chime in with a “but actually....” ....and then prove the original poster right. It’s become automatic.
See when you say ‘the devs being a bit lazy’ that’s a sign to everyone involved to just stop reading what you have to say
Good.
Clearly the FTC saw Phil Spencer’s comment that it would be fun to make another Hexen game and were like, “We need to do everything we can to stop this.”
Fun fact, the actual game of the original FF7 fit onto a single disc, and in fact all three discs contained the data for the full game, all the textures and music and gameplay data. The only thing different was which cutscene FMVs were stored on each disc, as that was the majority of the data usage.
I’m lucky enough to have built a web api for a medium-sized company, with enough freedom to do it well (meaning, they were willing to pay the high price for quality work), and I can tell you that it’s all a matter of foresight.
I disagree. I think it’s exactly how we should look at any kind of art: how does it reflect who we are as an artist, a participant, and a culture? You can love the game and think it’s beautiful and doing wonderful things. But you can also look at it deeply and examine what trends of design are present in it and what…
I dunno, to me that’s where it gets way more interesting from a game design perspective.
For what it’s worth I don’t think they’re saying Link is some sort of imperialist, or that you’re a bad person for liking the game (it’s rad as hell, you should love it), they’re just pointing out how ingrained ideas in society…
I think he was being sarcastic man
Worked on a game many years ago that had very long levels. If you died, you were put back to the start of the level. This was a terrible experience and we knew it, which is why we added a save anywhere feature. But with the deadline to go gold looming, save anywhere was bugged and our engineers asked for three more…
The ability to give it to friends/sell it back is the good of owning the disc, in addition to always owning it.
He’s got over 15 million subs on YouTube. Your anecdotal lack of awareness of him does not negate his popularity.
1-8 million is a (imprecise) big range so I would take that back of the napkin number in the context it was offered in: a casually tossed off tweet from a different studio, where accuracy and precision isn’t germane to the point - there is motivation to make the number sound impressive.
People who use “democratization” as a synonym for doing shitty things:
I’m conflicted about this. On one hand, I’d love to not give Rowling any more money. On the other hand, the developers of the game obviously don’t share her views, and hurting them to spite her doesn’t seem like the right way to go. I wish there was a way to support the devs and indulge my nostalgia without any cash…
Another observation: our society’s entertainment in general regularly extol things actively harmful to social cohesion, from normalizing violence as ‘cool’ and sexualizing women of ever younger ages.
Super insightful post dude, I’m going to try to touch on this:
