I think this is a reasonable assumption. What this man did is fireable and probably actionable (criminally and civily,) but I can understand how the former officers who literally executed Nichols on camera would have been (and will likely remain) the focus of the attention and ire surrounding this case.

Not really. The school didn’t fire her; they allowed her to resign. Then they released some weakness, “[We don’t] condone any form of racism...” which doesn’t have the same ring as “We don’t tolerate any form of racism...”
