His payout was because Google bought his first autonomous driving company. I don’t think Google gives out $100M retention bonuses to employees, or they might have given him one after his stock purchase vested.

My guess is he was chafed at having sold his tech and all its upside to Google, and wanted to get more of the money and fame as the tech developed.. Still doesn’t explain why he didn’t just rebuild it from scratch as he claimed.
