EV (and hybrid) drive trains are very reliable. You’re just trading complexity in the vehicle (which can be serviced in a few garages across the city) with miles and miles of infrastructure maintenance. I bet an EV would be more efficient, too, given the electrical losses across all those miles of line.

I think there’s some regulation (maybe from europe?) about turn indicators not being allowed on a moving body panel like the trunk lid. Not sure why they couldn’t make the outboard brake light into a turn signal, too, but maybe there’s another regulation for that.
